Application of BIG Data techniques to a problem
In my blog posts, I have described the ways in which BIG Data can be used to benefit organisations, help with decision making and provide solutions to problems. In this blog, I will describe some methods that can be used to apply BIG Data techniques to solve the problem of designing targeted advertising.
Companies such as Google and Facebook invest an immense amount of money to make sure they are able to collect and store as much data from each user as they physically can. They will then use BIG Data analysis techniques to analyse the data they collect.
Targeted advertising is an advertising technique used by companies where they will personalise the ads to the specific user which are tailored to each user based on the data they collect about the user.
Companies such as Google and Facebook invest an immense amount of money to make sure they are able to collect and store as much data from each user as they physically can. They will then use BIG Data analysis techniques to analyse the data they collect.
These companies utilise targeted advertising as they are able to collect massive amounts of data from each of their users which makes their advertising a lot more accurate due to the massive size of their data sets.
One way these companies get data about their users is from using tracking cookies which track which websites a user is browsing even if that company does not own the other websites that the user is browsing. This information is extremely useful for companies that utilise targeted advertisements as if the user is browsing the a specific website then they can show advertisements related to that website.
Targeted advertising is an extremely valuable strategy which generates billions and is the majority of these company's revenue. They are also able to take this data they collect and sell it to other companies which.
BIG Data analysis allows these companies to process and analyse these massive sets of data they collect from their users using BIG Data technologies to combine multiple sources of data, such as tracking cookies, video posts, and social media comments, to provide the company with the true view of the data which gives them valuable insight into which ads they should show each user to generate as much revenue as they possibly can.
BIG Data makes it much easier for companies to design targeted advertising due to the massive amounts of customer data available to these companies. For example, every hour on Facebook, there are millions of comments posted which will be stored in massive data sets to be searched for keywords which will then be used to personalise the advertisements that are shown.
For example, if a user comments about smoking then they will receive ads about smoking and vaping as they are much more likely to purchase the product being advertised compared to if a user that posted comments .
The companies and targeting me for Ads so they can make more money... it completely works!
